Red Road

I didn't realise it would be as dark as it was; when there's a cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart at the start, and before you recognise it you think it sounds like a cover of a cheerful pop song that you can't quite remember, that's a sign it wasn't a very happy film.
Possibly it's a little overlong, and I won't go on about the plot much, because various reviews I've read had me trying to second guess the ending a little too much, but very well shot. Occasional flying plastic bags are redolent of American Beauty, but at least there's no nincompoop telling you how beautiful it is to watch them dance.
And it has a sex scene in the front of a Renault van, which is always good when played for laughs. Maybe it goes on a little too long at the end (just before the resolution, you start checking your watch and wondering how many more of the 113 minutes there are to go), but then it's rare to have a film that's secure enough to sit in silence for a while.
