"Hiking" in Tung Chung, Chai Wan

Today I was meant to go running, but I struggled with that, and instead we took the MTR all the way to the end of the Tung Chung line, to Tung Chung. I do like visiting eponymous destinations, after all.

A walk, spoiled

As it was sunny today and we needed some exercise after the weekend, we went to Lantau for a hike.

Kinabalu National Park

Looking down from Kinabalu Park

When the driver gets frightened and says "oops", that is usually a bad sign. Unfortunately, when you're doing 90 km/h down the side of Mount Kinabalu, there's not much opportunity to modify your travel plans in favour of a more cautious chauffeur.

Dragon's Back

Today we finished work early, so that the office could depart en masse for a hike over Dragon's Back, and then dinner in Shek O. The CEO had just flown in from the west coast of America the night before, so (possibly as an evil prank) we'd invited him along for this yomp over a hill in thirty-degree heat and 75% humidity.

Hiking in Hong Kong at night

Hong Kong By Night
... or perhaps I should title this The Englishman Who Went Up A Hill And Came Down All Sweaty. After the irony of not being able to sleep last night because the air conditioner wasn't making a loud dripping noise, I was feeling pretty shabby all day, but I put off going to the gym at lunchtime to blow away this ennui, because of an invite to go hiking from Tai Koo over to Repulse Bay.  That's 10 km in real money; rather than a flat walk in the countryside, it was going to be hour upon hour of walking up stairs, the greatest gift that the concrete industry of Hong Kong ever gave back to its citizens.

Falling apart

I went for a walk today down to the Tai Tam reservoir. I was already sluggish from staying up too late last night; I didn't wake up until just before midday, and then I spent a few hours being disappointed by Chuck Klosterman's Eating The Dinosaur. I really enjoyed his previous work, but perhaps there's just too much in this volume about American football and basketball for me to be able to engage with it. If there was more hair metal anecdotes from the 1980s I'd be much happier. Ah well.
