This evening I had very little brainpower left, after buying my fiancee's birthday present, and some bread.

Getting More Things Done

While running at the gym today I had a burst of inspiration.

Actually, that's not entirely true.

Inspiration generally arrives for me after perspiration, not during it. I had finished showering and was towelling off when I had my idea. Maybe I should have done a Greek and run out yelling 'Eureka!' but the people of Hong Kong aren't enthusiastic about public nudity, and having had my exercise for the day, another run was out of the question.

Coding - slight return

Today I spent a lot of time staring at a computer screen, fumbling around with databases, so what better way to relax tonight than to go home, install a database server on my MSI Wind, and try to feed into it all the words I've been busily gathering over the last few weeks?  Then, I hoped, whilst I wasn't a maven at writing perl code, I could at least leverage my ability to wrangle a database and get all my words out in an order that I wanted.

That is, if I didn't stop hitting myself in the face for using the word 'leverage' long enough to keep typing.

Good weather in Hong Kong

Shockingly good weather today; I woke up with the sunlight streaming in, and then hurt my head by trying to read Anathem. It's been on my bookshelf for over a year without me getting round to it, partly because of Neal Stephenson's technique, which is to make every book he writes longer than the previous one. And since I made the mistake of buying the hardback edition (so I could get it earlier - and then spend more time not reading it) I fear doing terrible injuries to my spine when I pick it up.

After all, almost ten years ago I put my back out reading Mary Gentle's Ash - and though it was a thousand pages, it was only a paperback. Hence my reluctance to start on Anathem.
