Edging into Darkness

I didn't leave the office at all today, which I think was a mistake. I try to take a promenade around the building at least once a day, to stop my mind and body seizing up, but I was too busy today wasting energy on arguing the toss about spreadsheets, and not spending enough time justifying my existence.

Chocolate, dark

I've been reading more of The Chocolate Wars, and continue to be struck by the strangeness of the Kit-Kat being invented. It's a chocolate-coated proof of the claim that technology is anything invented after your twentieth birthday; those chocolate-coated wafer biscuits are so much part of the fabric of the world that it seems impossible that there was a time before the Kit-Kat. It seems even more strange, somehow, that the Kit-Kat was invented, had a date on which it came into being, rather than being discovered.

Unlike Maltesers, which have been grown in the Falkland Islands for over a thousand years after they were first domesticated.

Cleaning up

Today we planned to visit the zoo and feed the giraffes, but after an eight mile run this morning I conked out completely, incapable of doing anything apart from hanging the laundry out.

Things I've Seen At Geneva Airport

After a final day in Geneva, eating rubbery croissants and then fine pizza (strangely, Geneva seems filled with pizzerias) we took the train back to the airport. I checked in behind a strange looking chap: a grey bird's nest of scruffy hair atop his head, Chanel glasses that advertised themselves with centimetre high lettering in glittery Swarovski crystals. And then a baggy old t-shirt half tucked into some tracksuit bottoms that might have been pulled out of a ditch. I'm just saying it was a bit of an odd look for somebody, and it's not like I don't wander around being malcoordinated.

Only boring people get bored

But I'm very bored.  Very bored indeed.  I've spent all day trying to do something dull with a spreadsheet, and the only spice in this lacklustre task is that whatever dull thing I did with that selfsame spreadsheet two months ago, somebody somewhere else has changed something so that dull thing no longer does what it did.  What am I doing with my life?

Year of Eating Differently (18): Planet Organic, Torrington Place

Off to get my dissertation bound today, so stopped off on the way back from the University of London Union and went into this organic/healthfood store. Picked up a plastic wrapped felafel wrap (certainly a leitmotif of this project, but the first one to be so suffused in quality polluting packaging), some crisps (or at least I thought they were crisps, but more careful perusal of the packet suggests they've been baked and are made from rice, so they're probably utterly disgusting) and finally a bar of Green & Blacks chocolate (recently acquired by the chocolate behemoth that is Cadburys, so there goes their 'alternative' credentials). Now I'm thinking how foul the rest of this meal is probably going to be, I'm kicking myself for not getting the giant bar of ginger flavoured Green & Blacks when I had the chance...
